sheriff medical college at hassan

"A 100 acre campus planned alongside a waterbody, intended to impart the best medical education in an open and friendly environment"

The intent of design behind the Sheriff Medical College at Hassan was to create a college with a strong vibrant sense of community. Spaces between the buildings were carefully crafted as spill-out spaces and meeting areas. Access points such as gateways and forecourts, stairways, foyers, shaded streets with seats, courtyards and cafeterias were all designed to encourage interaction amongst students and faculty alike.

The campus at Hassan has a ‘maidan’, a lush ground from which the entire campus can be seen. The college, along with the main hospital, is placed at the start of the campus, whilst the buildings comprising the hostels lie on either side of the ‘maidan’.

The college buildings have been built around six courtyards, making for useful public spaces. The administrative building and the auditorium flank the entrance, whilst the seminar halls and various educational departments are built along a promenade with the library building at the end. A water space runs along the length of the promenade creating a sense of beauty and calm.

The hospital building is planned along a central axis corridor with wards and procedure areas on either side of it.

The group of seven hostel buildings have been designed keeping entrance fore courts, colonnaded terraces, promenades and central courtyards in mind.

I.M Kadri Architects has also proposed a bund on the waterbody; all permanent residences will be built along this waterfront to allow for river views and good ventilation.

All the buildings have systems to minimise the usage of electricity and also reduce operating costs. They have also been oriented for natural, glare-free North light.
