I. M. Kadri is an Indian architect, civil engineer, and founder of IMK Architects in the city of Mumbai, India. He has been a key figure in contributing to world renowned landmark buildings in several cities of India and around the world.

Born in Ahmedabad in 1929, here are a few interesting facts about Mr. I M Kadri.

  • He got his first project, Brighton Apartments in Mumbai, when he was 29 years old.
  • His stained-glass mural in Ramada Hotel Dubai features in the Guinness Book of Records for being the world’s highest mural at 135 feet.
  • He was highly influenced by Brazillian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
  • He became Sheriff of Bombay in the year 1994.
  • In the 1960s, I.M. Kadri was selected by Hilton senior management as an architect to build the proposed Bombay Hilton hotel in Worli, Mumbai, and was sent on a world tour to study all of Hilton's hotels around the globe. However, the Bombay Hilton Hotel was never built, and instead, Kadri went on to design many Indian hotels in the 1970s and 1980s, including many Taj hotels built in that era like the Taj Mahal (Mansingh) and Taj Palace Hotels in New Delhi.
  • His biography, ‘The Architecture of I M Kadri’, by Kaiwan Mehta was published in 2016.
  • He was bestowed the ‘Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Trophy’, Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2021.
