D. Y. Patil University Rural Health Training Centre

"An amalgamation of lush courtyards and functionally efficient internal spaces to create a holistic healthcare centre for the rural community."

Dr D. Y. Patil University recognises the need for every medical college to have a Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) within a 100km radius. To realise the same, DPU intends to develop this project to serve the local community of Theur, Maharashtra.

Proposed on a 9-acre land, this Primary Healthcare Centre is equipped with essential facilities such as Casualty, Out-Patient Department (OPD), Radiology Department, Operation Theatres and ICUs among others.

The facility entwines biophilia into a medical environment by planning the spaces around two main courtyards with singly loaded corridors opening into the landscaped area. These courtyards are designed to bring abundant natural light and ventilation into all the departments, which will in turn help to reduce cross-contamination and the spread of infections through a natural process.

The wards are strategically placed to ease movement within the spaces. The departments with the maximum patient flow are provided on the ground floor to segregate human traffic from departments with low patient influx.

The facility makes use of natural and locally available materials and construction techniques. A terrace garden for the people within the facility will allow the participation of nature in the healing process of the patients. The terrace will also be decked with solar panels for alternative energy generation. The facility will be constructed to allow for further expansion of the centre in the future.
